Box Office Forecast: Jan. 5 - Jan. 7

Updated: Jan 8, 2024

“I tell directors, ‘I cannot promise you a hit, but I can promise you that the film will be yours.’” - Jason Blum, Founder of Blumhouse.

Blumhouse is diving into the new year with their latest horror flick, “Night Swim.” Ambler’s Cut estimates the only new film of the weekend to land in the $16 - $17 million range. There isn't much pull when it comes to audiences appearing at theaters the first weekend of the year, and the Blumhouse/Atomic Monster film will be mediocre when compared to their previous 2023 film slate.

Here's how we envision this weekend unfolding:

"Wonka" will finally fall. How far of a tumble? We forecast "Wonka" falling 33% and making roughly $15 million by Monday morning. Why? It has been in theaters for weeks now, and people need a change. "Night Swim" is a PG-13 film and seems like a fun ride filled with thrills and chills. It also boasts an interesting and intriguing plot/setting.

In third place will be "Migration" with a cool $13 million in box office revenue. This film has garnered serious word-of-mouth. Quora has been tracking a significant uptick in the film's online presence, and it seems to be growing into an online sensation. This raises an important question: maybe we need to release animated features in theaters and not straight-to-streaming?

In fourth, Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman 2” will achieve $9.5 million, experiencing a 48% tumble. This film has run its course for the most part, and now that the DC Universe has come to a close, it is time for some serious restructuring at DC.

Returning to "Night Swim," recent news has developed, and it seems Jason Blum has confirmed the completion of the merger between Blumhouse and Atomic Monster (James Wan). This is a significant move for Hollywood’s house of terror. Our guess: nothing problematic will come from this. In fact, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse have already partnered on many features in the past; the two companies will now synergize nicely and hopefully feel little ripple effects in the horror community.

NOTE: More to come on the merging of these two production companies.

Looking ahead into 2024, we are putting together a long-ranged forecast for this year's biggest flicks! Stay tuned for results and analysis.
